The Château d'If made famous by Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Count of Monte Cristo", is a French fortress built under the orders of King François 1st, between 1527 and 1529, in the center of the harbor of Marseille.

Built in order to protect the Mediterranean coast from possible invasion, the castle of If becomes in 1580 a prison of state aimed at imprisoning the opponents to the power. In the "Count of Monte Cristo", Edmond Dantes, the hero, is also held in these places.
